1. The Corruption of the World
As humanity multiplied on the earth, wickedness increased. Violence, corruption, and moral decay filled the world. God saw that every inclination of human thought was evil continually. This deeply grieved Him, and He decided to cleanse the earth through a great flood.
However, Noah was different.
“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”
— Genesis 6:8
Noah was described as righteous, blameless among his generation, and faithful in walking with God.
2. God’s Command to Build the Ark
God revealed His plan to Noah and instructed him to build an ark—a massive wooden vessel—to preserve life during the coming flood.
God’s instructions included:
-
Material: Gopher wood
-
Length: 300 cubits
-
Width: 50 cubits
-
Height: 30 cubits
-
Three decks
-
One door and a window
-
Coated with pitch inside and out (for waterproofing)
God also commanded Noah to bring:
-
Two of every living creature (male and female)
-
Seven pairs of clean animals
-
Enough food for his family and the animals
Noah obeyed exactly as God commanded, despite likely ridicule and disbelief from others.
3. Entering the Ark
When the time came:
-
Noah, his wife
-
His sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth
-
Their wives
-
The animals (which came to Noah as God directed)
Once everyone was inside, God Himself shut the door of the ark.
4. The Great Flood
Rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights. Underground springs burst forth, and the waters rose until even the highest mountains were covered.
-
Every living thing outside the ark perished
-
The ark floated safely on the waters
-
The floodwaters prevailed for 150 days
Only Noah and those with him survived.
5. Waters Recede and the Ark Rests
God remembered Noah and caused a wind to pass over the earth. Slowly, the waters receded.
-
The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat
-
Noah sent out a raven (which did not return)
-
Then a dove:
-
First time: returned with no place to land
-
Second time: returned with an olive leaf
-
Third time: did not return
-
This signaled that dry land had appeared.
6. Leaving the Ark
After more than one year inside the ark, God commanded Noah to come out with his family and the animals, so life could multiply again on the earth.
7. Noah’s Sacrifice
Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices to God from the clean animals. This act pleased God.
God promised:
-
Never again to destroy all life with a flood
-
The earth would continue its cycles (seasons, harvest, day and night)
8. God’s Covenant and the Rainbow
God made a covenant with Noah and all living creatures.
The sign of this covenant:
🌈 The Rainbow
Whenever a rainbow appears, it is a reminder of God’s promise that never again would a flood destroy the entire earth.
9. After the Flood
God blessed Noah and his sons, commanding them to:
-
Be fruitful and multiply
-
Care for the earth
-
Respect life
Humanity began anew through Noah’s family.
